Mia Cleona Miller

Mia is finally here! It is weird to think that Doug and I have a baby, but we do!
Saturday, June 25th, Doug got home from working a 12 hour shift in the morning and went to sleep. I decided to go for a walk to let him sleep. I walked about a mile and headed back home. I felt fine. Doug woke up and we decided to go out to lunch. After lunch we stopped by our friend Emily's house to drop off a key to our house, so that when I went into labor, her and her husband could come by our house and feed Burrito. Still felt fine. By the time we got home I started to feel some back pain, but I had felt it so often that I didn't think much of it, but told Doug anyways. We then went out to the store and get some ice cream. We came home and I decided to go upstairs and lay down. My back was really hurting and I was having some bad cramping, again all things I have felt before. This time, my stomach kept getting hard every 10 minutes or so, and I was getting a horrible headache. Doug kept telling me to call the doctor but I didn't want to, so we laid in bed watching TV. Around 9:30 I called the doctor and told them what was going on. They said to stay home, take a bath, and call back in an hour. My head hurt so much that I could barely focus, but I took a bath and laid down to see if it would stop. It didn't so I decided to go into the hospital. At this point the only pain I could really feel was my headache, but I could tell I was having contractions every 6-7 minutes.
We went into the hospital and they hooked me up and said yes I was having contractions, but they were irregular. So they wanted me to wait and hour and walk around to see if they progressed. I was only 3cm at this point, so nothing urgent. After an hour they said they were going to send me home if there was no progression. The nurse said that I was now at 4 1/2cm and that I was going to stay. They immediately got me an epidural, which I thought was weird because I still really couldn't feel the pain of the contractions. But I took it. I was so scared of the epidural because I had heard so many horror stories. I started shaking really badly once they told me I was staying. I think I scared Doug. I couldn't control the shaking.

Honestly, the epidural was so easy. I felt a little pin prick of the first numbing shot, and then a few minutes later I asked the doctor when he was going to put in the epidural, he said that it had already been in a minute. I couldn't feel it at all. Then they started the medicine. My body did not handle the meds very well and all the sudden I couldn't hear anything the doctors were saying and started fading in and out. Doug said that the doctor and nurse immediately laid me back and got me so that I wouldn't pass out. It was a very weird feeling. My blood pressure dropped to about 90/40. The doctor that gave me the epi was not available so they kept the same dosage of meds in me, which I really couldn't handle very well. My BP stayed really low, and every time they tilted my bed up I felt like I was going to pass out again. So I just stayed laying down. Once morning came the night nurse said I was at 5cm and that they would probably start pitocin soon. The day nurse got there and said that as soon as the doctor came in they would break my water and start the pitocin. The guy that did my epi also came in to lower my dosage, which really helped and made me feel so much better. I was numb, but could still feel my feet and move my legs.
They started pitocin and around 9am the doctor came in to break my water. Once they did that the doctor said I was at 5cm. I was confused and the nurse said that when she came in this morning, I was still at 3cm, but she didn't want to tell me until she spoke with the doctor. The doctor has wanted to send me home, because my labor was not progressing, but the night nurse has gotten it wrong when she thought I was over 5cm, when I was really still 3cm. The nurse told the doctor that I already had an epidural, so they decided to keep me and break my water and give me pitocin. I was a little annoyed, but just glad that things were now moving.
Throughout the day I wasn't progressing very much, so I sent Doug to get some food and tried to sleep, which wasn't happening. Doug was so good throughout the whole thing. He had barely slept saturday after work, and was up all night. I tried to let him sleep as much as possible, but neither of us could really sleep. Come 4pm I was only 6cm, so the doctors had me lay on my sides. I had a new nurse by now who I really liked, and she had me lay on my side in a way that by 530 I was 10cm and ready to go! I could barely wait for the doctor to get there and once he did I pushed through one contraction and had my baby!
Mia Cleona Miller was born June 26th at 6:09pm. She was 7lbs 4oz and 20 inches long. I couldn't believe it when she was given to me. Doug and I sat and looked at her for a long time, then Doug went with the nurse across the room to give Mia a bath.
We are so happy to have her home with us now. She is a good baby, but we need to work on sleeping at night instead of sleeping during the day.

I loved that you posted this. It's so nice to be able to be a part of it in some way. You realize though that since you had your baby first I'll be asking you tons of questions when it's my turn.
I love reading birth stories! Thanks for sharing this. I hope you are doing well! Tight swaddling is the key to getting a baby to sleep!
